J.L. Bryan Haunted EBook Tour

(Jeff, or "JL" as he is known in the trade, was one of the first writers I met in the crazy world of indie publishing. And now here I am hosting the last stop of his Haunted E-Book tour--a day late--my fault. A warm welcome and farewell to a cool little book that you NEED TO BUY NOW! And also make sure you comment to WIN PRIZES!)

The (Dead) End of the Tour

It's just about time to close the evil spellbooks, pack the chains in the old trunk in the attic, and call in the exorcist—you've reached the end of The Haunted E-book Tour.

Yes, we've been talking about ghosts for two months now, but the dark days of winter are over.  It's been a fun experience getting to know so many bloggers and readers, as well as doing these giveaways while trying to on the topic of ghosts for two months.

I want to thank all those who have hosted the tour, and all the readers who participated, for making this a memorable and wonderful experience that I won't repeat again unless I lose my mind.  And I want to thank all the great indie authors who donated ebooks for The Haunted Library Grand Prize!

I started planning the tour back in November, with no real idea what I was doing, except that I wanted to reach out and find new people who might enjoy my writing.  Since then, everything has changed.  The number of people reading my books has grown tremendously, so much that I could afford beautiful new book covers from Phatpuppy Art and hire Scott Nicholson to do a full line edit on my next book, Tommy Nightmare, which comes out next month.

Tommy Nightmare is the sequel to Jenny Pox, and I plan to have it out in April, since my wife's having a baby boy in May.  So I assume I’ll be busy then.

When I started putting books out on Kindle, I never imagined how far things would go and how fast they would evolve.  Scott has been an important part of this journey.  He edited the Jenny Pox partial (the first five chapters) back when I was querying lots of New York literary agents about it in late 2009, and he told me that I should look into this Kindle thing, because interesting developments were happening with ebooks.

They've turned out to be quite interesting—I now hear from readers all over the world, and lots of people have messaged me in various ways to let me know they are eager for the Jenny Pox sequel.  This new book is the first one I've written with the knowledge that an audience was actually anticipating it, which makes the writing process both more exciting and a bit more challenging, too.  In fact, Jenny Pox is going to be a trilogy, with the third book coming out by the fall.  So, hopefully people will like that second one.

I should also thank Amanda Hocking, without whom Jenny Pox might still be a very obscure book.  Also thanks to Vicki Keire for her insightful beta read of Tommy Nightmare, and her feedback definitely improved the book.  As I write this, the manuscript is on its way home from Scott to me, and I expect to release Tommy Nightmare sometime in April.

In the meantime, I have some Grand Prizes to give you!  Commenting on this post within seven days enters you to win one of these great prizes: The Haunted Library ebook collection, a Kindle 3 with WiFi, and a Kindle DX—the more you've commented on the tour stops, the greater your chance to be one of the three Grand Prize winners.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, it looks like I have a novel to revise and hundreds of Grand Prize entries to tabulate.  Thanks to Scott for hosting today's final stop, as we lurch out of the ghostly underworld and into the bright light of the day.  And thanks to everyone who’s followed the tour!  I hope it has been educational and you’ve learned lots of useful information about ghosts that you can apply in your everyday life.  However, I doubt it.

Thanks again!

20 Free Kindles!!! (eighteen exclamation points)

The Red Church at Amazon for 99 cents now ranked at #228 at 11 a.m. EST! Stoker Award finalist and Mystery Guild selection.  Buy it and put it in the Top 100 so I can give you folks an extra Kindle 3!

Can't afford it? Don't have a Kindle? Just go there and tag it--that helps more people see the book around the Amazon universe. Popular tags are: paranormal, mystery, horror, suspense, ghosts, thrillers, bestsellers, kindle, kindle books,  Christian fiction (yes, it has spiritual themes though it's not your typical category "Christian" novel), fantasy, dark fantasy

As of today, Oct. 4, I have sixteen ebooks live for the Kindle on Amazon.

As previously announced, I am giving away (via Amazon) a Kindle DX through my 90-day blog tour and a Kindle 3 to a randomly selected newsletter subscriber, as well as the Pandora's Box of 100+ free ebooks to a Twitter follower.

And I was going to throw in a bonus Kindle if any book cracked the Top 100 on Amazon. Now I am upping the stakes: I will give away one free Kindle 3 for EACH of my books that cracks the Top 100 during the tour, in either the US or UK Kindle stores.

If one book does it, I will throw in one. If five books crack it, I will throw in five. For a total of up to 18 Kindles (well, actually 20, because I am releasing two more books during the tour--CURSED with J.R. Rain and my thriller DISINTEGRATION).

Sure, it's hard to hit the Top 100. Yet 100 books are always doing it at any given time, so it's not impossible. I'm not going to pester anyone any more than I normally do, and I am too lazy to track who does what. The tour is totally voluntary and winners are randomly selected by the local library staff.

If you want to increase your odds of winning a Kindle, you spread the word about the tour and my books. If you just want to show up at the blogs (in the sidebar to the right) and enter for free, then that's cool, too.

The idea is simple. You spread the word, I sell more books. You buy my books, I give stuff back to you. And we all sleep at night, hopefully with a Kindle under the pillow. Thanks for playing!

And please write a review for The Red Church at Amazon, because it will be the Oct. 2 "Scary Short" from Kindle Nation Daily, going out to 10,000 subscribers and Kindle owners. Zoe Who? It's Zoe Winters, of course

(Scott: Zoe and I have sort of played a little "Good cop, bad cop" on message boards, discussing the publishing industry. She is a firm believer in controlling everything, while I am willing to concede a lot for one big fat check. Her energy is exhilarating or exhausting, depending on your caffeine level, but she is never dull. Check out the "Zoe Who?" video series. She's also a gifted paranormal romance author who knows how to push the right buttons in an intimate scene. And meeting people like her is one of the real joys of the indie era. I'm off at her blog today, and since we're both giving away Kindles, hit us both!)

Stealing From Smart People (and Giveaway)

Scott and I are house swapping today. He's blogging over at my place, and I'm blogging at his. I'm in the middle of a week-long book blitz and blog tour to promote my latest release, "Blood Lust". And I'm giving away an Amazon Kindle (possibly two).

That possibly two part is the stealing from smart people thing. See, Scott is doing a big blitz, too (As I'm sure you've noticed). The difference is that his is a marathon and mine is a sprint. He's going to be doing this for 90 days. I don't have the stress-tolerance for 90 days of this craziness. About a week of crazy is all I can handle at a time.

So he asked me early on about doing a guest blog at my place and said I could do one at his. And I mentioned I was doing a blitz as well for my book. When I got the contest details of his Kindle giveaway, I saw that he was giving a second Kindle if he got into the top 100 of the overall Amazon Kindle store. And I thought... dude, that's smart! What more incentive can you give people to buy the book on Kindle than offering to double their odds of winning the grand prize?

So of course I swiped the idea for myself. As an indie, I'm always watching people around me. What they're doing. What's working for them. What isn't. What doesn't work for someone else might work for me. Or what works for someone else might not work for me. But I'll totally steal a great marketing idea from a smart person like Scott and try it to find out.

So I thought about the second Kindle giveaway idea. I wanted to make it a high enough goal that if I didn't get there, I could console myself with the fact that I only had to buy one Kindle prize, but that if I DID get there, I wouldn't care that I had to buy another one, lol. So I picked "top 25 in the overall Kindle store."

That's the first page of overall Kindle bestsellers. Getting there, even for an hour or two to me was worth a second Kindle giveaway.

Bestseller lists on Kindle aren't about vanity or being able to say: "Hey, look how awesome I am." It's about more exposure and visibility. The goal is first to get as high in sales ranking as possible, then to see how long you can stay there, then keep repeating that. Each time hopefully you'll spike a little higher briefly, as well as stay a little higher, longer.

So that's what I'm doing this week. If you'd like a chance to win a free Kindle, check out my blog for contest details. There are multiple ways you can enter. And some of the options allow you to enter multiple times.

I'll also be giving away a signed print copy of Blood Lust to a commenter in the comments section here.

And now the obligatory Blood Lust description...

It’s all about the blood...

Comprised of three novellas, Blood Lust gives readers a snapshot look at the world of the Preternaturals Series. (Future installments of the series will be novels.)

KEPT:

As a cat therian (shifter), Greta's blood is already sought after to enhance spells and potions, but due to a quirk of her birth, her blood is potent enough to kill for. When her tribe plans to sacrifice her, Greta must ally herself with Dayne, the dangerous local sorcerer, and the only person strong enough to protect her.

CLAIMED:

For a vampire, Anthony isn't a picky eater, but he's drawn to Charlee's blood more than any other. Like a fine wine saved for a special occasion, he's denied himself this pleasure. But one night, high from the potent magical blood of another, he claims his prize and loses control. Ashamed of almost killing the one woman who means anything to him, he wipes her memory of the event. When Charlee awakens with complete amnesia, Anthony is the only one who can clean up the mess he's made.

MATED:

Because of the vampiric blood that has run through her veins since birth, Jane has been a target for vampires who resent a human being "kindred." She's forced to disguise herself as a vampire groupie to appease them and safeguard her life. When she's abruptly given to Cole, the leader of the werewolf pack, to satisfy a gambling debt, she discovers the blood running through her veins has a far greater impact on her destiny than she ever imagined.

Print and ebook copies are available at Amazon.com and Amazon.co.uk. (other retailers coming soon.)

Blog Tour tomorrow-- coffee and keyboard ready

Well, here we go...the craziest thing I've ever done in my life. Well, maybe not my entire life, and maybe only involving books, but here comes 90 days of nightmares, three months of mischief, an autumnal adventure, a...well, you get the picture.

If you don't, here's one, as I go from the World's Laziest Hack to the Ugliest Hillbilly On The Internet, the Steve Buscemi of paranormal fiction, the Johnny Depp of supernatural suspense, the Seth Rogen of--oh wait, I don't want to be the Seth Rogen of anything.

Be sure to check back here tomorrow when bestselling mystery writer Vicki Tyley flies in from Australia for a visit. And the day after that, the unquenchable Zoe Winters will be here, who is conducting a Kindle Giveaway tour of her own!

I will pop in here at the blog from time to time with news, but will have a roster of guest bloggers checking in, too, so give them warm treatment! (BTW the Pandora's Box is now up to 71 ebooks).

My wife doesn't really understand how the whole thing works, but I explained that I was finally telling my whole story--the full Scotty--in all my crazy glory, and of course she instantly took credit. The best thing about the new era and Act II of my career is that I get to do whatever I want. Unlimited dreams. The only people I need to worry about are you and my other readers. If I can't turn this into a spectacular failure, I haven't tried hard enough. But you know what? I am having a blast. It feels like this is what I'm meant to do right now. Fourteen years of writing. A stack of books. And the Internet. This couldn't get any better unless they invented virtual chocolate.

I hope you follow the tour and comment. Spread the word. Laugh at me or with me, as long as you laugh. Best of all, have fun. I am!

House-sitting writers

While I am away (mostly) on my Kindle Giveaway Blog Tour, other writers will be providing guest posts here--among them Zoe Winters, Debbi Mack, and Vicki Tyley.

They are among the growing list of writers who have contributed to the Pandora's Box of free e-books--I hope to get a few hundred in there by the end of the tour on Nov. 30, when I will be back here with a wrap and a long winter's nap. Writers who want to donate can send mobi, PDF, and epub file(s) to pandorasboxebooks AT yahoo.com, or a Smashwords coupon valid at least through the end of 2010.

Look for three new releases during the tour--the metafictional thriller As I Die Lying, the science fiction pulp thriller Forever Never Ends, and Gateway Drug: Mystery Stories. I will also be releasing a novel co-written with J.R. Rain.

Hope you join in, spread the word, celebrate books and bloggers, and most of all, have fun!
